How Should Children Behave in the Masaajid?

June 17, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-06-17

While Ramadan is an exciting time for many people, children are also enthusiastic and look forward to reaping the abundance of rewards during this blessed month.

Many fathers take their young sons to the masjid during Ramadan, excited that his child can engage in the taraweeh salaah.

However on occasion, children tend to become bored and mischievous which is in their nature resulting in a disturbance during salaah.

Fathers who take their sons to masjid should take responsibility for their wellbeing and ensure that the child’s behaviour is in commensurate with the respect and rules of the house of Allah.

So how should a child who misbehaves in the masjid be disciplined and by whom?

Imam of the Hudson Street masjid in Lenasia Moulana Muhammed Bham says parents should take initiative and look after their children.

“Especially if they bring underage children, it become very disturbing for the Imam that is reading and confuses him.”

Radio Islam’s Ejaz Khan says some parents are too overprotective and children are aware of this.

“So that’s why they are able to behave the want because they know that their parents will have their backing.”

While many fathers are enthusiastic in taking their children along to the masjid for salaah an anonymous musallee says parents should take responsibility for their kids and teach them how to behave.

Imam at Sulaimaniyah Masjid in Lenasia Abdul Huk Panchbaya says as much as children need to be disciplined and taught from a young age to behave in the masjid there is a manner in which they should be spoken to.

“Do not be vulgar towards them, do not shout them and do not make them despondent from coming to the masjid.”

The prophet (S.A.W.) taught us that the Masajid are Allah’s houses and that they have etiquette and rules that should be learned and upheld by every Muslim.
