With just a week left before the end of the blessed month of Ramadan, Sadaqatul Fitr has been set at R 22 for Hanafi and R 28 for Sha’fi.
However many have wondered just how Sadaqatul Fitr which is distributed to the less fortunate is calculated.
While Ulama say that a person is free to give any amount of Sadaqatul Fitr they wish, which will be greatly rewarded by Allah, a hadith explains how the amount is determined.
According to a hadeeth by Tha’labah ibn Su’ayr (RA) mentioned in Sunan Abu Dawud, Sadaqatul Fitr is calculated on one sa’a, which is approximately 2kg of dates, 1.633kg of wheat or 3.266kg of barley.
According to the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa, every year the organization conducts a survey of retail prices from various outlets across the inland provinces.
It says wheat flour is the commodity of choice because it is commonly used in the community.
The Jamiat says the final figure of Sadaqtul Fitr is an amount a person would safely use to purchase one-and-a-three quarter of a kilogram of cake or bread flour.
Zakaah al-Fitr is often referred to as Sadaqtul Fitr. The word ‘Fitr’ means the same as Iftar, breaking a fast and it comes from the same root word as ‘Futoor’ which means breakfast.
Sadaqatul Fitr is a duty which is Waajib on every Muslim, whether male or female, minor or adult as long as he/she has the means to do so.
Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) narrates that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has made obligatory Sadaqatul Fitr as a means of cleansing the fasts from idle and lewd talk and in order that it provides food for the poorest and destitute. – (Abu Dawud).
Depending on the sighting of the moon, Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to be on 5th of June 2017 Insha’Allah.
