The Honolulu police maintains there was no wrongdoing on the parts of its officers in the fatal shooting of 29-year-old South African rugby player Lindani Myeni.
Myeni was killed during a confrontation with police on Wednesday night after they responded to reports of a burglary.
Police body camera footage shows Honolulu police officers attending to a call about an alleged burglary in Nuuanu shining a torch in Myeni’s eyes, and then ordering him to lie down without identifying themselves.
The officers physically struggled with Miyeni and attempted to Taser him before ultimately shooting him to death.
Acting Honolulu Deputy Chief Allan Nagata says the video contains only the portions that are “relevant” and “contain the actual assault.
Nagata says he was impressed by how police handled the situation.
“They are in a fight for their lives, let me be clear with you and as a result of this, they did very well. They were very brave and they fought for their lives, I was very impressed with what they did. They didn’t shoot or discharge the firearm right away, this is not a case of overreaction.”
Myeni’s wife has taken to social media to ask questions about her husband’s death.
Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in KwaZulu-Natal has called for justice and for the Department of International Relations (DIRCO) to step in following the death of Myeni in Hawaii.
Miyeni and his family relocated to the island this year.
