By the grace of Almighty Allah, Nurul Islam Centre held an AGM and Election on Sunday, 29 November 2015 at the Nurul Islam Masjid.
This AGM was preceded by a special meeting on Sunday, 20th September 2015 resulting in the adoption of a new constitution. This constitution set in motion a very structured election process which comprised of the following:
- A voters roll / membership
- Demarcation of areas in the surrounds of the Masjid to ascertain who was eligible to apply for membership of the voter roll
- Written nominations in advance
- Voting by secret ballot
- Appointment of independent electoral officers by the members to oversee all of the above
- Appointment of independent auditors/observers to audit the election process and results
At the AGM a detailed written and verbal Chairman’s Report, Masjid Sub -Committee Report and Audited Financial Statements (for every year under review) were presented.
The Center’s Auditor, Dawood Coovadia reassured the house that the finances of the Centre were well run and that all financial operations were above board.
Approximately two hundred members attended the AGM.
The election results for the seven member Committee was as follows:
The Committee comprises of four office bearers and three ordinary members.
Office Bearers:
1. Chairman: Moulana M. Galid Pandor (Nominated Unopposed)
2. Vice Chairman: There were two nominations for Vice Chairman:
- Hafiz M. Yusuf Asvat: 170 votes (Elected)
- Ababakker Moosa Ravat : 14 votes (Insufficient Votes – NOT ELECTED)
3. Secretary: Moulana Sulaimaan M. Ravat (Nominated Unopposed)
4. Treasurer: Hasan Badat (Nominated Unopposed)
Three Ordinary Members
From the four nominees in this category, the following three were elected:
5. Hafiz Zaakir Cassim: 163 votes (Elected)
6. Moulana Ayub Mangera: 162 votes (Elected)
7. Shafiq Chopdat: 153 votes (Elected)
Aba Bakker Moosa Ravat: 28 votes: (Insufficient Votes – NOT ELECTED)
The independent observers /auditors remarked that the elections were run very professionally and that the new electoral structure at Nurul Islam could be a yardstick for other organisations.
Members acknowledged the Committee for their contributions over the last seven years, expressed their satisfaction with the new electoral system and wished the incoming committee well.
