Hira & Thor Caves in Makkah to Undergo Refurbishment During COVID-19 Lockdown in Saudi Arabia

April 20, 2020

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has taken advantage of the lockdown in the country to refurbish the historic Hira and Thor caves in the holy city of Makkah.

Saudi Gazette reports that directives to this effect have been issued by the Emir of Makkah Prince Khaled Al-Faisal.

Prince Badr Bin Sultan, deputy emir of Makkah Province, has been assigned the task of monitoring the projects.

Hira which lies about two miles from the Haram, the cave is a little less than 4 meters in length and a little more than one and a half meters in width.

It was here that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received the first revelations of the Holy Qur’an during the blessed month of Ramadan.

The Thur cave is where Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his companion Abu Bakr (RA) hid for three days from the Quraish tribe.

The Nabi of Allah and his companion were protected by spider’s web that Allah had commanded the spider to spin at the cave’s entrance, preventing the Quraish from seeing within and finding them.

The aim of the refurbishments is to remove all the changes introduced at the two sites visually disfiguring the sites throughout the past years.

A number of utilities and facilities will be constructed to serve visitors to the two sites.
