The transport department has identified excessive speeding, drunken, reckless and negligent driving along with un-roadworthy vehicles as the key reasons for the carnage on South Africa’s roads over the festive season.

With the holiday season over, the road death toll is already standing on at least seven hundred and fifty.

The transport department says it plans to increase law enforcement operations and awareness campaigns to prevent further disregard for the law and illegal driver behaviour.

Spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi says officials are also working with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to prosecute those who break the law.

“Minister Nzimande will have an urgent engagement with the Department of Justice and the NPA to ensure that serious cases involving violations of traffic laws are prosecuted expeditiously, to send a strong message that there is zero tolerance to transgression of road rules.”
