Herman Mashaba Elected Mayor of Joburg

August 22, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-08-22

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Herman Mashaba has been elected as the new Mayor of Johannesburg.

The Black Like Me founder received 144 votes beating the African National Congress’ (ANC) Parks Tau who received 125 votes.

Officials met to elect a new mayor, chief whip and speaker of the council. The DA’s Kevin Wax received 141 votes and has been elected as the new chief whip while Vasco Da Gama has been named the new speaker.

Mashaba postponed his inaugural speech following the passing of an ANC councillor Nonhlanhla Sithole during the first sitting of council.

He says he would make his inaugural speech at the next council sitting on 13 September.

“Tomorrow is another day let me not subject you to a long speech. I’m committing under the DA lead administration that we are going to bring change.”

Mashaba also promised to fight corruption.

“As of this evening, corruption is declared public enemy number one in this city.”

There were chaotic scenes in the Johannesburg council earlier this afternoon with some party agents pushing and shoving each other over concerns around the secret ballot process.
