The non-profit organisation Hennops Revival is appealing to the public for assistance with a clean-up operation at the Hennops River. Since its establishment three years ago, the NPO has removed two million kilograms of waste from the river. However, pollution remains a problem.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Hennops Revival founder Tarryn Johnston says the project was inspired by her daughter, who wanted to clean the river. This inspired her to create an organisation after seeing the waste discarded into the river.
“I’ve got hands, and I have got a voice, and I would just pick up rubbish and make Facebook posts about it, and infallibly it just started off with my personal brand [and then grew into an NPO],” she says.
Hennops Revival is in partnership with waste management companies that recycle the waste taken out from the river, and sometimes the waste is used to create art such as frames.
“We try to be as creative as we can, but a large part of it does end up in the landfills,” says Johnston.
The river currently has a catchment system that limits larger objects from entering the river.
