Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-04-12

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille has announced she is stepping down as the party’s leader and that she won’t be standing for re-election in May.

Zille made the announcement at a press conference at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday.

She says she would complete her second term as Western Cape Premier which comes to an end mid-2019.

“Every political party needs renewal and fresh blood after a decade, no matter how well incumbent team performed.”

“I will continue working unceasingly to consolidate democracy in South Africa.  This has been my life’s work.”

Zille has led the DA since 2007.

Nominations for leadership close on 20 April.
