Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says formal disciplinary action is being instituted against Western Cape Premier Helen Zille for violating the party’s federal constitution in a manner that brought the party into disrepute.
Zille has come under fire for her comments on colonialism with her tweets suggesting that the legacy of colonialism had some positives.
Last week opposition parties in the Western Cape Legislature called on the DA to show it supports non-racialism by removing Zille from her top position.
Maimane says the disciplinary action will not solely concentrate on her tweets, but also comments made in public.
He recalled that he had personally laid the complaint that prompted an investigation that lead to the decision to charge her.
“I must protect the project and cannot tolerate any action or behaviour by any person which seeks to undermine or harm it. And it is my belief certainly having read the report that the assertions put before us require further action and disciplinary action.”
Zille will remain in her post as premier while during the disciplinary process.
