The Gauteng Health Department says it will continue serving halaal food to Muslims patients admitted to the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg.

In a statement, the department says an alarm was raised within the Muslim community after a circular was issued from the facility indicating that Halaal food services will no longer be available as of 15 December.

Spokesperson Kwarra Kekana says the acting department head on Wednesday  instructed Helen Joseph Hospital to immediately and unreservedly withdraw the said memo.

“The move to stop providing Halaal food services was as a result of poor planning from the side of the facility and simply unacceptable. The GDoH extends a heartfelt apology for the inconvenience caused as a result of the poor management of the issue by the hospital.”

Kekana says the matter has since been resolved and assured Muslim patients and their loved ones that the service will not be interrupted.
