Speaking to the SABC, the Health Department says they are seeing an increase in cases in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo and the Western Cape.

The department has called on unvaccinated people to get their jabs and booster shots to fight the rise of Covid-19 cases.

Health Department Spokesperson Foster Mohale told the SABC that the department is working closely with National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and other scientists to monitor the situation.

“We would like to appeal to all South Africans, unvaccinated and partially vaccinated, to protect themselves against this life-threatening disease with vaccines. The Department of Health (DOH) is working closely with the NICD and other scientists to closely monitor the situation,” Mohale said.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape Health Department continues to monitor COVID-19 particles found in wastewater treatment plants in the province.

“About three weeks ago, there was a peak, and about two weeks ago, it slowly started to come down. What we are seeing at the moment is that because people are not testing as much as they used to, we see fewer number of cases detected,” says Western Cape health department chief of operations Keith Cloete.
