Hours after an emotional meeting with his executives, Ajay Gupta has reportedly left South Africa for Dubai with his brother Atul for good.
The City Press is reporting the two Gupta brothers including one of their wives and 5 assistants boarded their private luxury jet at Lanseria Airport with a mountain of luggage at 11pm Thursday night.
An eyewitness told the paper the Gutpa’s flight was destined to land at Al Maktoum International Airport, 37km west of Dubai where one of the brothers sons is already living.
It’s understood Ajay and Atul resigned all their directorships while family sources say the Gupta’s shareholdings are likely to be put up for sale but were now in the safekeeping of local executives.
On Friday the Gupta brothers and President Jacob Zuma’s son Duduzane announced their resignation from Oakbay Investments and Oakbay Resources and Energy.
The Guptas say they’ve been the subject of a prolonged political campaign, while Duduzane Zuma says aspersions have been cast upon him and his family.
A number of local companies which include Absa, SASFIN, FNB and KPMG have also cut ties with Gupta owned companies.
The family has come under increasing pressure due to allegations that they influenced President Zuma’s appointment of Mines Minister Mosebenzi Zwane and former finance minister Des van Rooyen, as well as offering ministerial posts to Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor.
City Press reports the final decision to leave South Africa was taken by Ajay last month when the state capture fight was at its toughest and when the ANC decided to formally investigate the family’s activities.
