Hanekom: “Kathrada Foundation Critical in Taking South Africa Forward”

September 23, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 23-09-2018

Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom says organisations like the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation are critical in taking South Africa forward.

Hanekom was speaking during the tenth anniversary celebrations of the foundation at the Sandton Convention Centre on Saturday.

Hannekom says while the country faces many challenges, the Kathrada Foundation has made a difference in many ways to South Africans.

He says the Kathrada foundation stands for the values of Ahmed Kathrada and many of his closest comrades including Laloo Isu Chiba who did so much for South Africa by deepening non-racialism in the country.

“This great celebration is in the year when we are celebrating the year in which Nelson Mandela would’ve turned 100-years-old. In many ways it’s appropriate and this year is the year of hope, the year of a new dawn, the year of addressing the problems that happened, that should not have happened in the post-apartheid life of South Africa.”

Referring to Mcebisi Jonas who was also a speaker at the celebration, Hanekom says the former finance Minister is a very highly valued individual and is among those that lifted the lid on state capture.

“He’s surrounded by a whole lot of people that have helped the truth come out. We know South Africans deserve to know the truth and the truth must be dealt with and we must move forward towards that dream of not only a non-racial South Africa, but an ethical South Africa, a South Africa with the values of our constitution and our freedom charter.”

Hanekom says late Ahmed Kathrada’s dream and lifetime commitment was for a non-racial and non-sexist democratic South Africa.
