The Hawks say they are working with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to serve warrants of arrest to thirteen suspects linked to the so called ‘State of Capture’ into the Vrede Dairy Project.
Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says the warrants were served on Wednesday to suspects in Bloemfontein and Johannesburg.
The Hawks assisted by the National Intervention Unit of the SAPS effected the arrests on some of the implicated suspects while others handed themselves over.
Oakbay chief executive Ronica Ragavan, Varun Gupta, former Oakbay chief executive Nazeem Howa and Gupta business associate Ashu Chawla appeared in court on Thursday.
In a statement Mbalula says a total of eight suspects have been arrested during the takedown operation.
Two of the suspects are still being sort while three, two of Indian nativity and one of Chinese nativity, are believed to be outside the republic and assistance on them will be sought.
Mbalula says he appreciates the patience of the public in general for allowing the law enforcement agencies to do their work.
“Due to the sensitivity and seriousness of these matters it is not possible for the DPCI or my office to provide minute to minute account of the state of capture related investigations but once again assure all that since mid-2017, at least 17 dockets are being investigated without fear or favour and indeed with no holy-cows.”
The dairy farm matter is at the centre of the R220 million allegedly paid to the controversial Gupta family and companies linked to their businesses, which was intended for black farmers.
