Gunmen Attack Worshipers at Khayelitsha Mosque

The Khayelitsha community in Cape Town on Tuesday was shocked after a worshiper was gunned down inside a mosque whilst praying. The Imam of the masjid was wounded in the attack.

It is understood that four men entered the mosque at Ntlazane Road, Khayelitsha on Tuesday at 7 pm and opened fire on the congregation.

Police spokesperson, Noloyiso Rwexana said when police arrived they found the 30 year Imam and the deceased victim with gunshot wounds to the body. The injured man was taken to hospital while the other man died at the scene.

Mishka Daries, spokesperson for the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has condemned the attack saying, “It is very a very tragic incident, and we share our condolences with the family of the deceased, and wish the Imam a speedy recovery.”

Daries said that there was as yet no known motive for the attack.

No arrests have been made. Cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened.

The funeral of the deceased was held on Wednesday.
