Greek Military Prepared to Face Turkish ‘Provocation’ in Eastern Mediterranean

October 19, 2020

Greece’s military says it is prepared to face any “provocation” by Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean. Al Arabiya reports that Greek armed forces are on high alert

Turkey and Greece have, since August, been disputing waters with regards to gas exploration. Greece claims rights over the waters around the island of Kastellorizo. Turkey, in turn, insists it has greater claims to the eastern Mediterranean as it has a longer coastline.

In addition to military preparations in the Aegean Sea, Greece is expecting new diplomatic initiatives from Berlin, failing which, it is to ask that the European Union impose severe sanctions against Turkey.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said  promised to push ahead with energy exploration.
