Greek authorities have detected African swine fever in a wild boar after the country reported its first-ever outbreak of the disease in 2020.

According to World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), the disease was found in a dead wild boar in a forest in the Serres region, which borders Bulgaria and North Macedonia.
African swine fever (ASF) is mostly harmless to humans but highly contagious among pigs. This has often disrupted pork production after outbreaks were detected in farm herds in Asia and Europe.
Meanwhile, Greece’s agriculture ministry in a statement says measures were being taken to curb the spread of the disease.
Reports suggest that the disease has spread across the European continent to countries including Germany and Italy.
