The new GO!Durban public transport network has hit delays with the project only set to begin testing in October, four months after it was initially scheduled to begin.
No specific reasons have been given for the delay.
Speaking to Radio Islam, head of the eThekwini Transport Authority, Thami Manyathi says their planned dates will not be met.
“Our desire was to start in June this year but we’ve had to push the start a little bit back. We’ll start the commissioning of the route from Pinetown to KwaMashu across the uMgeni in October and we’re looking to go live in December during the holidays so that we make sure we’re ready to start in the new year.”
The R20-billion project has faced numerous setbacks since work started on it in 2014, including disruptions by taxi operators and the renewal of old infrastructure.
The bus service route has been billed by as an affordable world-class transportation solution that will link the city with KwaMashu in the north, uMlazi in the south and Pinetown in the west.
