Scientists predict that our overheating world will likely break a critical temperature limit for the first time over the next few years. Researchers say there is a 66% chance we will pass the 1.5° Celsius global warming threshold between now and 2027. The chances are rising due to emissions from human activities and a likely El Niño weather pattern later this year.

Dr Gideon Polya, Melbourne scientist, humanitarian writer and activist, shared his observations and insight on the topic.

At the Paris 2015 Climate Change Conference, it was agreed that we must not exceed more than a 2° Celsius increase. But the World Meteorological Organisation has issued a report that accounts for the high levels of greenhouse emissions and El Niño weather patterns.

Global warming has been relative; however, with the El Niño effect, global warming is enhanced. The report warns that within the next five years, there is a high probability of one year when we will exceed 1.5° Celsius. Further to this, the report warns that the frequency of this is going to increase.

Polya says that the increase is unavoidable, especially as the world is not addressing the problem of greenhouse emissions, which are increasing at an incredibly high level.

He concluded by saying that the warming of 2° Celsius will be catastrophic, but we are obliged to do all we can to make the future better for future generations.
