Giyani Mosque Torched by Protestors

June 23, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-06-23

Protestors have torched a mosque in Giyani in Limpopo in the ongoing violence that has gripped the country.

It’s understood a temporary structure being used for prayer was petrol bombed  this evening which caused substantial damage to the property.

Violence and widespread looting in the Giyani area have affected a number of businesses and residents following an incident earlier this week in which two people were killed after they tried to rob a foreign owned shop.

Community activist Yusuf Abramjee says a new mosque currently under construction which is located on the same property as the temporary prayer facility was not affected.

“Members of the community rallied and extinguished the flames but the damage is extensive to the building.”

Abramjee says the attack on a place of worship must be condemned in the strongest terms.

“News of the attack on the mosque has come as a shock not only to members of the Muslim community but to all sectors of the South African community.”

Abramjee has urged police to beef up visible policing and to act swiftly against the lawlessness and the criminality in Giyani to bring stability and normality to the area.
