While water has become a very scarce commodity for residents in Gauteng, the need is even more urgent at the different hospitals and clinics. Gift of the Givers has now stepped in as the situation has deteriorated at an alarming rate, and donated thousands of litres of water to the Kalafong Hospital in Attridgeville in Pretoria.

Speaking to Radio Islam International, the organisation’s Gauteng community liaison officer, Cliffort Mabe, said the hospital needed clean water to ensure patients could take their medication.

While the government supplies hospitals with JoJo tanks, the water can only be used to clean hospitals as it needs clean drinking water.

After delivering 5litre clean drinking bottled water on Sunday, Gift of the Givers received a call from a local councillor in Roodepoort reporting the water challenge within the community on Monday.

“The gift of the Givers team assisted and started the supply of water from around 5am to 10pm to the Roodepoort Community,” he added.

An investigation by the Gift of the Givers team is underway at a clinic in Tau, North West, following an assessment conducted by Mabe.

He said there needs to be more than a JoJo tank of 5000 litres of water supplying five villages.

Meanwhile, Gift of the Givers is digging trenches and doing other work at the Rahima Moosa and Helen Joseph hospitals. Rand Water has expressed concern about a further decline in reservoir storage. This is going to exacerbate the dire situation further.

Gift of the Givers will continue to come to the fore and carry through for all people in South Africa in times of crisis.
