As South Africa battles the third wave of the Coronavirus pandemic and the Delta variant putting tremendous pressure on healthcare facilities across country, NGO Gift of the Givers have set up a COVID-19 Emergency/Disaster Facility at the Nurul Islam Hall in Lenasia.

In a statement, Drs. Fatima Lambat, Mohammed Manga and Safiyya Lambat say the third wave has also put a lot of strain on first responders and healthcare workers.

The doctors say the facility is an attempt to make smarter use of resources to ensure better patient care.

“With the help of the Almighty, we hope that this COVID-19 Emergency/Disaster Facility will reduce the pressure on the hospital system. The centre will be run by doctors, paramedics and nursing staff who are experienced in COVID-19 management.”

The doctors have also emphasised that the COVID-19 Emergency/Disaster Facility will not be a walk-in facility and will have 24-hour security at the premises.

“This is currently a 20-bed facility. Strict COVID-19 precautions are in place to ensure that there is no risk of spread to the school, masjid or surrounding neighbourhood.”

The doctors say they are grateful to all the volunteers who have come forward and have assisted with their time and donations.
