The sister of Naeem Deedat who was the sole survivor of a fire in which his wife and four kids died has told the Johannesburg Magistrates Court she was very close to the family and unaware of any tension between the couple.
Naeem’s sister Hasina was testifying in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Thursday into the inquest of the deaths of 31-year-old Suraya Deedat and her children aged 6 months to four years-old who died of smoke inhalation after one of the children’s pillows fell onto an electric heater in their room.
Naeem was the sole survivor of the fire in July 2011, which gutted their home in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg.
Reporting from the Johannesburg Magistrates Court, Radio Islam’s Hoosein Mohammed says Hasina testified the family were very close knit and there were no issues between the couple.
However, prosecutor Gerrie Nel questioned Hasina about specific incidents between the couple.
“Advocate Nel put to her many events that occurred that she was unaware of, such as squabbles between the couple and other issues. The court then deemed that she was not as close as she claims to the couple and therefore her statements remain irrelevant.”
On Tuesday, a fire expert testified that the bodies were in an abnormal position indicating some form of possible foul play.
