The Gauteng Traffic Police have nabbed three of its own for alleged bribery and corruption.

Two officials from Johannesburg’s busiest testing station Langlaagte appeared before the Specialised Commercial Crime Unit yesterday, dealing with a crackdown on corruption at Gauteng traffic centres.

Last week Friday, police arrested two officials responsible for issuing road worthy certificates.

The pair were caught while trying to solicit money from a school transport bus owner.

The Road Traffic Management’s Simon Zwane says they took nine thousand Rands from a bus operator.

“The victim was someone who needed a road worthy certificate, the money then changed hands and they were then arrested.”

Zwane is adamant more arrests will be made.

“We think the problem is endemic, we identified where it’s taking place, we know the modus operandi that is followed, that’s why I am confident that we’d be arresting more”.

Authorities hope the latest arrests will serve as a deterrent, saying it will be cracking the whip at various identified centres across the country.
