Gauteng, The Best Province to Live & Work…

April 18, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 18-04-2018

The Institute for Race Relations (IRR) says while the Western Cape is perceived to be a province where living standards is the highest, Gauteng is the best province to live in when looking for a well-paying job.

The organisation says there are a lot of jobs that are being generated in Gauteng.

According to the 2018 South Africa Survey, published by the Institute of Race Relations Households in Gauteng’s three metropolitan areas rely less on social grants than those in the five metropolitan areas located in other provinces.

The proportions of households receiving social grants in Johannesburg at 29.4, Tshwane with 30.3% and Ekurhuleni at 31.2%, fall below the average of 33.8% for South Africa’s eight metros and are significantly lower than the national average of 44.8%.

IRR analyst Gerbrand van Heerden says there is a very high urbanisation rate into Gauteng because the province contributes about a third of South Africa’s economy.

Van Heerden says there are a lot of factors favourable in Gauteng including having the highest labour absorption rate among all the provinces except in the Western Cape and the proportion of people spending more than ten thousands rand per month is twice as high in Gauteng than in seven other provinces.

“Gauteng has a relatively lower expanded unemployment rate. There’s also a large number of highly educated people living in Gauteng and the proportion of adults with a degree or higher qualification in Gauteng is twice as high then the national average.”
