Gauteng Premier David Makhura’s Office on Fire

June 30, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 30-06-2017

The City of Johannesburg has confirmed that a fire which engulfed a portion of the office building of Gauteng Premier David Makhura in Simmonds Street in Johannesburg has been contained

The blaze broke out early this morning.

Makhura was not in the office at the time as he is attending the ANC’s 5th National Policy Conference at NASREC in Soweto starting today.

He told the media  the fire started on the seventh floor of the building this morning.

“The fire started at 08H40  as a result of an electric plug. There were already people [in the office]. The fire was contained there.”

Makhura says all 280 staff that work in the building have been evacuated and are safe.

He says the burnt files are backed up offsite.

“The seventh floor is our finance department. But we have been reassured that everything in that section is backed up to ensure that whatever happens, no information is lost.”
