Gauteng Premier David Makhura says the reopening of the Lenasia South Hospital is a significant move for region G in Johannesburg.

Makhura, together with the acting MEC for Health, Jacob Mamabolo officially opened the Lenasia South District Hospital on Friday

The District Hospital, which was previously a community health centre, was undergoing upgrading  to cater for the growing health needs of the Lenasia South community.

The upgraded facility includes more than a hundred beds for COVID-19 patients.

Makhura says one of the investments of the Gauteng government was to focus on areas in the province where existing facilities needed to be upgraded by adding more beds and staff and using state of the art technology.

“We were upgrading this as part of our response to COVID-19. But our response to COVID-19 has always been that there must be a legacy after COVID-19 and it is for that reason that we have turned this community health centre into a district hospital.”

Makhura says Gauteng is ready for the move to risk level 1 of the COVID-19 lockdown as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“We have been working very hard in Gauteng province during level 2. So now that were going to level 1, we are putting a lot energy on the revitalization of the economy.”

Meanwhile with African National Congress (ANC) provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting taking place this weekend and the fate of Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku on the line, Makhura says the party is consistent on how it deals with issues of corruption.

The ANC in the province  will consider a report by the Provincial Integrity Commission, which found Masuku failed to practice adequate oversight of the PPE contracts being awarded by his department.

This relates to a R125-million tender given to the husband of presidential spokesperson, Khusela Diko.
