The Gauteng Education Department says it’s saddened that a former Soweto school guard accused of sexual abuse has been acquitted.

The Palm Ridge Magistrates Court acquitted Johannes Molefe of all charges on Wednesday.

Molefe was accused of abusing more than eighty children from the AB Xuma Primary School last year.

The 58-year-old man faced three counts of rape and 11 of sexual assault.

The department’s Steve Mabona says the judgment was scathing.

“We need to respect the judgement because there was a lot of things that the judge indicated, talking about a comedy of errors committed by the police, prosecution, Teddy Bear during their process including our officials.”

Mabona says the department has started a process to train teachers and employees at schools on how to deal with abuse cases.
