Gauteng Education Dept: Over 17,000 Grade 8 Applications Completed for 2022 Academic Year

August 11, 2021

Faizel Patel – 11/08/2021

The Gauteng Education Department has confirmed that over 17 057 applications for grade 8 pupils have so far been completed.

The department was briefing the media following the opening of online registrations on Tuesday for the 2022 academic year.

Head of department Edward Mosuwe says SMSes with application links have been sent to parents and guardians

“There was a delay in getting SMSes in the first hour. We were able to get just over 15,000 SMSes to parents in the first hour, but now we can confirm that 132,000 SMSes have been sent out in bulk to all qualifying parents.”

Mosuwe has also clarified that the online system has only opened for grade 7’s  that are in public schools.

“It excludes the new grade 1’s that will be coming. It also excludes those that are outside the public schooling system at the moment. For those that are outside the public schooling system that want to come to grade 8 into our public schooling system in 2022, the system will open on the 13th of September.”

Mosuwe says over 183,000 grade 7 pupils are currently registered at public schools in Gauteng.
