The Gauteng Education Department has confirmed that a number of learners at schools in the province are testing positive for COVID-19.
This comes after the province is experiencing a surge in Coronavirus cases with over 489,000 infections.
On Wednesday Wits University director of vaccines and infectious diseases Professor Shabir Madhi told Radio Islam International that the third wave of the Coronavirus started about three weeks ago in Gauteng when the positivity percentage increased to above 10%.
The Gauteng Education Department’s Steve Mabona says officials are monitoring the increase in the number of pupils being infected with the Coronavirus.
“Where it is recommended by the Department of Health for us to close schools, we are doing so. They are actually close for one to three days and the learners are expected to come back.”
Mabona says everyone has the power to stop the spread of the Coronavirus by strictly adhering to the non-pharmaceutical protocols.
