Gauteng Adopts Zero Tolerance to Crime this Festive Season

December 14, 2016

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 14-12-2016

Gauteng premier David Makhura says Gauteng will adopt a zero tolerance approach towards crime this festive season and the new year.

Makhura joined Gauteng community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi- Mlaobane, members of the Gauteng traffic police and the South African Police Service (SAPS) at a roadblock on the N12 freeway today as part of the festive season crime and road safety campaign.

During the festive season many road users use Gauteng’s roads network to travel to other provinces and their destinations.

Makhura says the road block on the N12 freeway is part of Gauteng’s visible policing plan to deal not only with road safety but all other crimes as well.

“We want to also deal with murder rate, the murder rate is too high. Violence against women and children too high. We want to deal with crimes across the province. The visibility of the police is going to be sustained in the New Year as part of our policing strategy.”

Makhura says road users have welcomed the operation and suggest that such campaigns should not only be conducted during the festive season but throughout the year.

He says the combined forces of the metropolitan police service, SAPS and other law enforcement officials will be out in full force during the holiday period.

“I said to all the police services they have to act firmly, they have to act without fear or favour and enforce the laws and by-laws. There’s no place for criminals in our province and all kinds of crime. Zero tolerance is already something that we are enforcing.”

Makhura has wished residents of Gauteng well over the festive season saying they should enjoy their break after a long and difficult year and return back to the province to work together in the New Year to build their country into a country of dreams.
