Former Director-General in the presidency Reverend Frank Chikane has told Radio Islam that the many problems facing the country is a result of a number of mistakes by the ruling party.
South Africa is facing a number of issues including the charging of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan for fraud, the state of capture report by former public protector Thuli Madonsela amongst others.
While charges have been dropped against Gordhan and new reports emerging he might be charged again for setting up the SARS rogue unit, the state capture report is more damning and reveals that President Jacob Zuma failed to act on claims of state capture and the relationship between a number of top officials and the controversial Gupta family.
Chikane says the problems have brought shame to the country.
“We thought we were ready to govern and some people will remember we even produced a document called ‘ready to govern’ but actually we are theorizing what happens in government and the reality turned to be different.”
Chikane says he was wrong to think that members of the liberation movement could not be corrupted.
“We thought that members of the liberation movement particularly of the African National Congress were angels because they fought a gallant struggle, a highly moral struggle and we believed they were not corruptible and that’s where we also made a mistake.”
Chikane says he has requested a meeting with the President and also written an extensive letter to him expressing serious concerns about the country indicating he would not publicise the letter until he has had a conversation with Zuma.
