South Korea’s former President Park Geun-hye has been sentenced to 24 years in prison and ordered to pay a whopping $17 million in fines after being convicted of bribery, coercion, abuse of power, and other charges.
Political commentator Charlie Maeng says the decision comes almost a year after Geun-hye was removed from power.
“The current government drives very strong liquidation of strong rooted evils, while opposition parties and conservative groups complain that it’s nothing but revenge.”
Maeng says thousands of pro Geun-hye supporters stood outside court in protest of what that have labelled an ‘unfair trial’.
“They also got angry that the lower court broadcasted the court case live, by citing that President Park is innocent by the principal of the presumption of innocence.”
The New York Times reports that Park did not show up in court for her sentencing on Friday.
“She has refused to attend any court hearings since October, staying in her solitary prison cell, complaining of poor health and insisting that she is the victim of a political conspiracy.”
