ConCourt Finds Former President Jacob Zuma Guilty of Being in Contempt of Court Sentencing him to 15 Months Imprisonment

June 29, 2021

Faizel Patel – 29/06/2021

The Constitutional Court has found former President Jacob Zuma guilty of contempt of court sentencing him to 15 months imprisonment.

The highest court in the land handed down judgement on Monday on what punitive measures Zuma should face for failing to appear before the State Capture Inquiry.

Justice Sisi Khampepe delivering the judgement said Zuma’s tactics should act as aggravating factors in determining an appropriate sanction.

“Mr Zuma is in violation of the court and his defying of the court in public is of no relevance and is guilty of being in-contempt of court.”

Khampepe says never before had the authority and legitimacy of the Constitutional Court been subjected to the level of attacks posed by Zuma.

“There is no basis that Mr Zuma can say that he was threatened unfairly, it flies in the face of justice and for those who lost their lives for this freedom.”

Khampepe says the constitutional court considered an unsuspended jail team of two years.

“The majority judgement orders an unsuspended jail sentence of 15 months.”

Zuma has been ordered to submit himself to the Nkanda police station within five days of the ruling so that he can begin his sentence failing which Police Minister Bheki Cele must take all steps to ensure the former president is delivered to prison within three days.
