With the current COVID-19 lockdown ending albeit slowly, South Africa’s free, homegrown hiking navigation app Forge has announce the release of new hiking maps in Gauteng.
Since launching in 2019 in Cape Town, over 1 300 kilometres of trails have been added to their ever expanding mapping database.
While Gauteng may not be regarded as the trail capital of South Africa – among all the cars, traffic, hustle and mine dump dust – are areas with trails that offer something for everyone along quartzite ridges, grasslands, vleis, urban forests and wooded valleys.
Joshua Weiss, Head of Research & Development at Forge says Gauteng is the most populous province and is a burgeoning region of outdoor activity, as shown by the throngs of people on her trails in recent weeks since the hard lockdown.
“The team behind Forge grew up in Jo’burg, and we hope that through our app and website we can inspire the residents of Gauteng to explore the pockets of awesome green spaces that the province has to offer, with our high quality maps packaged in an easy-to-use app.”
Users of the app can look forward to over 200 kilometres of trail and 300 points of interest across 10 different Gauteng reserves, parks and greenbelts to explore this long-weekend and beyond.
The free app, with a curated library of hikes, GPS location and offline maps, is available on both the App Store and Google Play.
