The so-called “fool-proof” prevention measures implemented by authorities in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, to prevent illegal electricity connections appeared to have failed when Police found illegal connections near the Lenasia Train Station.

Speaking to Radio Islam, social activist and candidate for the Safety and Security Portfolio in Lenasia, Jakes Karolia said authorities have implemented “relatively effective” measures to curb the spate of illegal connections.

However, he said, such measures may not always be effective.

“To try and prevent illegal connections – although there is fool-proof prevention – it’s not possible. We cannot prevent this; we just have to be vigilant and see if we can combat this crime,” he said.

He was speaking to Radio Islam after a joint operation between the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and local security personnel saw the disconnection of illegal electricity connections near the Lenasia Train Station.

Karolia said Lenasia, which has for years been plagued by crime, vandalism and illegal settlements, has become a soft target for criminals.

“Lenasia has become quite vulnerable, as a soft target, for criminals. Criminals have been taking a lot of advantage of our soft nature and Lenasia at large. My main aim is to create a secure Lenasia in conjunction with our law enforcement and security partners,” Karolia said.
