Fines You Can Expect for Flouting Lockdown Restrictions

If you planning a night out on New Years, be ready to cough up around R3000 if you’re not indoors come the 9pm curfew

This is part of the latest pandemic restrictions, accompanied by the latest information on fines released by the City of Joburg on Wednesday.

South Africa entered Level 3 lockdown on Monday at midnight, curfew was adjusted to run from 9pm to 6am.

The wearing of a face mask is now mandatory in a public place, and any person who fails to comply with a verbal instruction by an enforcement officer to wear a face mask is guilty of an offence resulting in a penalty of a R1,500 fine or 6 months imprisonment.

Alcohol sales has also been completely banned, drinking in public will also set you back a further R1500 in fines.

Lying about your Covid-19 status us not a good idea, you could be fined a hefty R3000 is caught.

According to the document, anyone who intentionally exposes another person to Covid-19 can be arrested and prosecuted for assault, attempted murder and murder.

Some offences are deemed serious enough that no admission of guilt (NAG) fines are stipulated, and the accused will head straight to court.

These include, amongst others:

  • Failure to wear a face mask while using or operating any form of public transport including taxis, buses and trains
  • Failure by school principals, managers / owners of childhood development centres to ensure supplies of masks/items to cover nose and mouth for learners and to take steps to protect learners
  • Failure by employers to ensure that anyone who uses, operates, performs services on public transport or enters buildings, places/ premises is wearing a mask/item that covers nose and mouth
  • Selling, distributing, or dispensing of alcohol (this includes wineries who offer tastings.
