North West police are investigating two counts of murder and attempted house robbery after the nephew of late Apartheid struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada and his son were killed in Schweizer-Reneke.
It’s understood two armed suspects entered the yard of 65-year-old Yunus and 28-year-old Ml Ahmed Kathrada last night in an attempt to break into the home.
Police say Ml Ahmed was returning from Masjid when he was accosted by one of the suspects where a struggle ensued and he was shot.
His mother then called her husband where another struggle ensued with the other suspect.
The police’s Kelebogile Moleko says nothing was taken from the house and the suspects fled the scene.
“While he was busy trying to open the butler door, one of the suspects while fighting him outside, he shot him on the chest. The husband came from the bedroom, he tried to fight with one of the suspects and he was shot at the back of his head. The 65-year-old man died at the scene while his child also died in hospital.”
Moleko says no one has been arrested and has appealed to anyone with information about the incident to contact the police.
