Farm Worker Shot After Being Mistaken for a Monkey

March 10, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 10-03-2017

A 47 year-old farm owner from Letsitele in Limpopo has been arrested for shooting a 55-year-old farm employee after he allegedly mistook him for a monkey.

It’s understood the employee was asked by the foreman to get a pick from the storeroom yesterday and when he returned while riding his bicycle,  he was allegedly shot with a pellet gun in the head by his employer.

The victim, who is from Mariveni village outside Tzaneen, was taken to the hospital with head injuries.

The police’s Motlafela Mojapelo says the suspect will appear in Ritavi magistrate court on a charge of attempted murder.

“The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned this behavior in the strongest possible terms. He went further and warmed gun owners to make proper identification of the target before making use of their firearms.”

This is the second incident within two months where people are mistaken to be animals and then shot at.
