Family Robbed of Thousands in Alleged Qurbani Scam

July 31, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 31-07-2018

Muslims have been urged to be cautious when responding to on-line classified adverts selling livestock, after a 45-year-old man and his family from the west of Johannesburg were robbed of thousands of Rands in an alleged Qurbani scam.

It’s understood the man responded to an advert on Gumtree on Sunday, which advertised goats for sale in Makwassi in the North West province.

The man says after negotiating with the buyer, he and his family drove to a farm in Makwassi to collect the livestock when he was accosted by a large group of men who robbed them of a substantial mount of cash, cell phones and other valuables.

“I was walking with him, me and my two nephews and the next minute we just check about eight guys coming. So I told him who’s these guys coming’. So he said ‘no they just coming to help you’. And then when they came, they just started robbing us.”

The police’s Sabata Mokgwabone says people wanting to buy livestock must be careful as criminals are placing adverts on classified websites with the intention of robbing unsuspecting members of the public.

“Although we have arrested a number of suspects, the incidents seem to be continuing. Hence we warn members of the community to exercise caution when they respond to online advertisement especially in the areas of Wolmaransstad, Boskei, Leeudoringstad and Makwassi.

Mokgwabone says members of the community should confirm with the local police station if there are people selling livestock in these areas so they can avoid becoming another victim of crime.
