A prosecutor in Thailand has confirmed that a jailed Bahraini footballer with an Australian residency will be freed after his country of birth dropped a request for his extradition.
Hakeem al-Araibi was arrested more than two months ago at a Bangkok airport while on honeymoon following an Interpol notice issued at Bahrain’s request.
Araibi was sentenced in Bahrain to 10 years in jail for charges reportedly linked to the 2011 uprising against the ruling Al Khalifah regime.
Veteran’s Today editor Dr Kevin Barrett told Radio Islam that pressure from the international community forced Bahrain to drop the extradition order.
“They realised that this is a terrible public relations debacle, for them it’s a disaster, they should’ve known ahead of time that that persecuting a popular athletic figure is not a good way to win friends and influence people.”
An official in the Thai Attorney-General’s office reportedly said the footballer will be freed by the end of Monday.
