There has been a massive explosion at the Engen refinery in Wentworth, Durban.
It’s understood the explosion happened just after 7am on Friday.
Residents from as far as Manor Gardens, Glenwood and Pinetown reported that they were woken up by a loud bang just after 7am
It’s unclear how many people were at the refinery at the time or if anyone has been injured.
Emergency Services are on the scene.
KZN Emergency Services’ spokesperson Robert Mckenzie says a massive plume of smoke could be seen rising from the fire at the refinery.
“Nobody has been injured as the result of the explosion but six people have been treated as a result of respiratory difficulties after breathing the smoke from the fire.”
Mckenzie says the exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
Roads around the refinery have been closed to traffic.
