The Imam of the Mayfair Jumu’ah Masjid has confirmed that a man shot and killed in the parking lot of the masjid was an Ethiopian national.
It’s understood the 40-year-old foreign national was coming from the masjid last night when he was accosted by two unknown suspects who shot him before fleeing the scene.
A bystander was also wounded during the shooting.
Police say the motive for the shooting is not known.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Ml Taahir Salloo says the man who resides behind the masjid is a regular five times musallee.
He says the Ethiopian community have been left devastated by the shooting.
“It was I think a very traumatic thing for the Ethiopian community as it seems like this brother is someone very famous and of a very high ranking amongst them. So literally you had the whole Ethiopian community that were there and its was a scene of utter mourning and something very traumatic to see.”
The police’s Lungelo Dlamini says no arrests have been made.
