The eThekwini municipality denied claims that acting Mayor Fawzia Peer was poisoned during a council sitting.

It’s understood the acting mayor was rushed to hospital after drinking from the water bottle that was allegedly laced with paraffin.

In a statement, the eThekwini Municipality’s Mandla Nsele says they have sent the bottle to a laboratory for testing.

He says Peer had complained about the taste of the water she had consumed.

“We will await for the results from the laboratory as well as her doctor’s findings before making any conclusion on the matter.”

Peer has been the acting mayor after Zandile Gumede took special leave to focus on her corruption case.
