Eskom has urged the public to be aware of criminals that purport to sell “cheap electricity” vouchers.

The power utility say it has been inundated with requests to conduct investigations into scams that take advantage of consumers who use prepaid electricity.

It says the criminals dupe people into paying for  “cheap electricity” through the use of electronic funds transfers including e-wallet and money market after which the scammers disappear and leave the customers destitute and out of pocket.

Eskom’s Karen Pillay says they are working with several law enforcement agencies to trace and prosecute the criminals involved in the scam.

“We want to urge the members of public not to fall prey to these crooks, but to report these acts of fraud to the police without delay.”

Eskom says co-operation with the law enforcement agencies has already resulted in some arrests and prosecutions in the Eastern Cape and in Mpumalanga provinces.
