Eskom has warned South Africans to brace for more power cuts as the country enters a bitter winter period.
On Wednesday, Eskom implemented stage four load shedding citing a further breakdown in generation capacity.
The power utility says despite a slight improvement in generation performance, it had further breakdowns at Kusile, Matla and Tutuka Power Stations.
Eskom’s Sikonathi Mantshantsha says there is no avoiding stage 3 power cuts that was expected to kick in at 8am on Thursday morning.
“Regretfully, this means Eskom has to implement Stage 3 loadshedding from 08:00 until 22:00 on Thursday. This is in order to continue replenishing the emergency generation reserves, which have been depleted. These emergency reserves are required to respond to emergencies in order to maintain the stability of the national grid. Thereafter Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented.”
Eskom says the capacity constraints will continue for the foreseeable future and all South Africans are urged to reduce their use of electricity.
