Eskom has warned South Africans about a scam where criminals are pretending to be the utility’s representatives, claiming that Eskom had changed its banking details.
The parastatal says fraudsters gave a Nedbank account number for Eskom urging them to start making payments there.
In a statement Eskom says the fraudsters use letters, faxes and emails bearing the Eskom logo and the forged signature of Eskom’s Group chief executive, Brian Molefe.
“Eskom customers are asked to take note that Eskom does not have a banking account with Nedbank and that Eskom would never send notifications to its customers in this manner.”
Eskom says its banking details appear on each customer’s electricity bill and, if in doubt, customers must contact the Eskom Customer Call Centre for verification.
