Eskom has confirmed that stage 2 load shedding will be implemented from midday on Thursday and will continue through to Sunday.
The power utility says the power cuts were necessary due to the loss of generation capacity overnight.
Eskom says two generation units at the Kusile power station tripped after the main coal feed conveyor belts feeding these generators failed.
“A generator unit at the Kriel and Duvha power plants also broke down. We currently have 5 358MW on planned maintenance, while another 14 748MW of capacity is unavailable due to unplanned maintenance, breakdowns and the outage delays.”
Eskom has urged South Africans to use electricity sparingly in order to minimize load shedding.
