Emfuleni Confirms Water Supply Restored

January 09, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 09-01-2018

The Emfuleni municipality has confirmed that 75% of meters have been opened and that normal water pressure and supply with no restrictions has been restored in all areas.

The municipality failed to honour its agreement with the utility on Friday, only paying 88% of its R200 million bill, resulting in water being cut off to residents.

In a statement, the Emfuleni municipality’s Stanley Gaba says water was restored after it had engaged Rand Water on Tuesday after it failed to resume services on Monday night as expected.

“Gauteng Premier Makhura and the Executive Mayor Khawe brokered another deal with Rand Water last night, and paid additional R17 million towards servicing the existing debt.”

It says while water has been restored, there are some pipe bursts due to ageing infrastructure and the communities must report them and the team will deal with them.

“Eatonside has bit of a challenge as Rand Water must fix their valve. At the moment it is not yet opened, and therefore the community will only start to receive water later this evening, that is, around 6pm as the Rand Water technicians indicated it will take a few hours to repair.”

The municipality says it is overburdened by a debt from residence of Emfuleni in the tune of R5 billion and has appealed to its communities to pay for all their municipal services accounts so that it is able to provide amenities which are not affected by disruptions.
